artisan direct ~ Steve Barylick

In 2007, after a 30-year career as an art and creative director, I started painting. I wanted to combine attributes of design with color, texture and movement to create paintings that have a passionate, energetic appeal, and invite viewers to interpret, from their own perspective, what they see and feel.

My career in art started simply: constant doodling, using pencils, crayons and then pastels, while exploring color and how it created light and depth on paper—which led to a Gold Key in the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards Competition. I graduated from Massachusetts College of Art, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting. I also received a Certificate in Art History from the School of Fine Arts at Boston University.

While at Mass Art, I developed my design skills, and began creating and painting wall murals, which led to work with graphic design and architectural firms painting wall mural designs. Nypro Inc., in Clinton, MA, and Sun Federal Savings Bank, in Biddeford, ME, were the most notable projects.

At this same time, two wall mural contests opened to students—one for the MBTA (the ‘T’)—and the other for the Boston Common Underground Garage. My designs won First Prizes in both contests. The garage murals are no longer visible; the ‘T’ murals at Kenmore Square are.

Following the success of the contests, I was commissioned to design and paint murals for individuals and for the Charles River Apartment complex in Boston. I have recently participated in solo and group exhibitions and have been featured in both print and TV, for an article in Artscope magazine, another in Redivider, the Emerson College Art and Literature Quarterly, the Spring 2009 issue and for the Boston Neighborhood Network Television (BNN) program It’s All About Arts, hosted by Glenn Williams.

My focus now is to continue to develop new bodies of work, enter juried exhibitions, select an artist’s representative, and build relationships with galleries interested in exhibiting my work.

I paint because it allows me to be unrestrained, original and visually expressive without limits or boundaries.

Formerly, as an art and creative director, there were many barriers to contend with, and now, I can cross any frontier I wish.

This new found freedom is challenging, exhilarating, and frightening, all at once.

My canvases start with a loose crayon drawing while leaving lots of white space; this anchors colors, textures and patterns that progress as the painting emerges.

Textures are applied, followed by glazes to create the background layers. Knife painting, mixing varying amounts of primary color and white, are done directly onto the surface to create the multitude of colors in the painting.

The finishing touch is color administered in flowing, rhythmic, energetic lines, flung with abandon, like a garden hose gone wild on a summer’s day.

What’s the most challenging part? Knowing when to stop, when it’s done.

The feeling when I’m done? Accomplishment. I tried my very best.

That is what I strive for, to create more attractively than the last painting.

One in which a viewer will stop, look and wonder.

My work is vigorous, cheerful, stimulating to do. And fun. That’s the essential part, I’m having the time of my life.
