artisan direct ~ Chris Twomey

Chris Twomey is an award-winning artist living in New York City. Awards include a Ford grant, CAPS, the Kitchen Center, and Experimental TV grant and American Film Institute Directing Internship. Recent 2008 exhibitions include POOL ART FAIR, NYC and ART NOW FAIR, NYC.

Twomey’s first solo exhibition “Omni Series, Art and Genetics in a Digital Age” shown at Tribes gallery in NYC and was broadcast on CNN’s Anderson Cooper 360 as well as featured in print reviews. In 2006, Twomey’s second solo multi-media exhibition, “Madonna Series” received reviews in “Art in America,” “The Scientist” “Art and Science Collaborations, Inc.” and NYArts Magazine. Since 1999, Twomey has exhibited widely in group art exhibitions around the USA and has work in the permanent collection of the Museum of New Art, Detroit, Rhizome Artbase, and other private collections.

Origins and identity are the themes that drive the imagery of Twomey’s work and is influenced by scientific or conceptual discoveries that impact Twomey’s understanding of these themes. Origins and identity are the focus because of Twomey’s transient upbringing in a family that moved around the USA every two years in an attempt to improve their social, economic, and educational status.

NM Mindscapes
An interior exploration, this work is an outward manifestation of an inward state of identity. The hills, trees, rocks, brush and sand are transformed by Twomey’s formal interest in the ethereal reality found in the ancient landscapes around New Mexico. This reality as observed 5 years ago, and which is now a memory, is colored by the present reality. The series reflect a true merging of history, self and selves over time.

Each image from this series is derived from a photograph and was manipulated, retouched, and printed by the artist. Each image is then hand-painted using ink, acrylic or watercolor. Twomey sees the interface between the mathematically based output of computer imaging and the hand derived personality of the human gesture as emblematic of our struggles of how to use science, technology, and the discoveries of our time to best serve humanity.
